Boulder to Belize – LIV SIR Broker’s BBB Moto Adventure

There are times to make bucket list dreams come true, and on February 13, 2015, LIV Sotheby’s International Realty broker, Chris Cullen, did just that when he arrived by motorcycle to Belize, the final stop on a 28-day, 4,381-mile mission to ride his BMW F800 GS motorcycle from Boulder, Colorado to Central America. After a journey fraught with danger, humor, and sometimes loneliness Cullen accomplished his goal.

“Chris’ journey is one of epic proportions,” said David Carner, VP and managing broker of LIV SIR’s Boulder office. “To organize a trip that takes as much planning and mental preparedness as Chris’ did demonstrates passion and perseverance. Those are traits we look for in brokers at LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, and this trip personifies his work ethic and core values.”

In Boulder, Before the trip, Ready to LIV!Having owned a home in Placencia, Belize for three years, Cullen dreamed of riding his motorcycle to his home in Central America. “It’s amazing how many people don’t understand that this is even doable,” said Cullen, who joined LIV SIR in January, and planned his trip to coincide with the launch of his new affiliation with the esteemed brokerage.

“I knew I wanted to make a monumental shift in my career and everything sort of came together like a perfect storm,” said Cullen. “I wanted to take my career to the next level by joining LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, but before I did, I felt I needed the time to shift gears, renew, and get ready to focus on the year to come.”

Cullen decided to take action and began planning the trip of his lifetime. An experienced motorbike driver, riding since he was only 8 years old, he mapped out his route with hopes of exploring the coast of Mexico and Guatemala, yet was forced to alter his course for safety reasons.

“I wanted to take the coast road all the way down, but I was told that the states of Michoacán and Guerrero were not safe, so I had to ride up and over Mexico City, then down to Oaxaca, and then to Puerto Escondido and the Bahia de Hualtulco area. Then I rode down the coast to the southern portion of Guatemala, and then up through Guatemala to Belize,” said Cullen.

To keep his clients, family and friends abreast to his whereabouts and daily happenings, Cullen documented his journey with candid photos and often times humorous posts to his blog.

“The title today’s blog could have been, ‘Day of the dead’ or ‘52 AK-47’s Make Your Heart Race’,” said Cullen, from a January 21, 2015 entry. He then described how two trucks with heavily armed military rolled up behind him as he was re-positioning gear, followed by him quickly fumbling for his camera to appear like an obvious tourist.

He shared accounts of overheating from wearing ‘too hot’ coconut husk pants and feigned surprise at the amount of Tequila, in Tequila, Mexico.

He shared the perils of driving; snow in Boulder forced a delayed start, the super twisty and curved roads in Mexico and the hillside hanging cliffs of Guatemala kept him on constant alert.

And there were times of loneliness. On his journey, Cullen missed not only one, but two important days in the lives of his family. First, January 25, his wife, Kristi’s birthday, followed six days later by his daughter, RyAnna’s 7th Birthday on Jan 31, 2015.

He visited the Pyramids (Piramides) in Teotihuacan and met simpler decisions, each day deciding which pair of underwear and socks was least dirty to wear.

“I had highs and lows, and ups and downs and twists and turns on this trip,” said Cullen. “I’ve had to make things work, I’ve had to pack and unpack my bike 26 times, or was it 27? I brought my yoga mat with me but stopped doing yoga about 23 days ago.” For Cullen, the accomplishment was in the journey itself.

Cullen joined the LIV Sotheby’s International Realty because his own beliefs go hand in hand with the lifestyle-oriented approach to real estate Cullen and the dynamic brokerage embrace.

“When I came driving in on my motorcycle I just happened to see the brand new Belize Sotheby’s International Realty office that opened this month and I knew then that it was meant to be,” said Cullen. “I’ve always wanted to explore the world and to be able to work with like minded individuals and this is the company that affords that.”

While in Placencia, Cullen met with Belize Sotheby’s International Realty and listed his property, so the next buyer may embark on an adventure of their own.
